As the process evolved, a few scenes we’d written with Rose and Leia turned out to not meet the standard of photorealism that we’d hoped for. We thought we couldn’t leave Leia at the base without any of the principals whom we love, so Leia and Rose were working together. We wanted Rose to be the anchor at the rebel base who was with Leia. One of the reasons that Rose has a few less scenes than we would like her to have has to do with the difficulty of using Carrie’s footage…. Along with stating (again) that the film is in no way an undoing of its predecessor, he revealed why Rose Tico scenes had to be cut from The Rise of Skywalker. Terrio, however, wants to make things clear about the intention behind the film. It’s a magnanimous answer that both acknowledges and dismisses the criticism at the same time. Abrams recently dismissed critics by saying they are “right” no matter what they say about the movie. Screenwriter Chris Terrio co-wrote the screenplay for the new Star Wars film.

Why They Cut a Number of Rose Tico Scenes from The Rise of Skywalker Yet, Terrio says that the Rose Tico scenes were cut from The Rise of Skywalker for practical reasons. Coming back with a big, important story for her character would have been a defiant middle finger to those online trolls. So constant was the deluge of hate for the young actor, she erased her social media presence. Unfortunately, because a vocal minority of Star Wars “fans” were upset by the film, some used it as an excuse to harass Tran. While that should, on its face, be ridiculous, the idea persists. However, the loss of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia forced them to essentially remove the story from the film.Ī narrative on social media and in some of the entertainment press is that The Rise of Skywalker cut their Rose Tico scenes in response to backlash to The Last Jedi. She did have a larger arc in the film at one point. Well, co-writer Chris Terrio spoke up recently to explain why Rose Tico scenes ended up cut from The Rise of Skywalker. If they’d given her a red arm, we might not have even recognized her. With just a little more than a minute of screen time, the character is about as important to the story as C3PO was to the story in The Force Awakens.
#Rose tico star wars movie
There are so many interesting avenues for her to explore, and Tran is more than capable of leading a movie or series as the character. One of the most disappointing things about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was that Kelly Marie Tran’s character barely appears in the movie. Seeing her reduced to barely a bit part in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker was a bummer and it would be great to see just what else she would be doing after the fall of the First Order. She was a hopeful and optimistic character in Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Kelly Marie Tran delivered a strong performance in the role. Disney committing to putting Kelly Marie Tran in a starring role as Rose Tico in a Star Wars movie or series will definitely go a long way in showcasing their support of Asian creatives.įrankly, Rose Tico deserves more time in the spotlight. In addition to the dispiriting fallout from the awful behavior Tran had to endure, there has been an effort to stem anti-Asian hate in general over the last few months. We also have to believe that this is a good PR move for Disney. It sounds like the Mouse House enjoys working with her and has found a way to revive her Star Wars character in a big way.

In addition to Rose Tico, she was also just the lead character in Raya and the Last Dragon. Kelly Marie Tran seems to have a good relationship with the powers-that-be over at Disney. One has to believe that this is an attempt to do her character justice after the actress was so horrendously attacked online and the studio slimmed her part down in the ninth film. Either way, we can conclusively state that Lucasfilm is interested in making an entire Star Wars project that will center around Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico. We have heard that it could be a full-fledged movie but might also be worked into a series on Disney+. Thanks to one of our trusted and proven inside sources, we have learned that Kelly Marie Tran will return as Rose Tico in a project that focuses on her character.
